TOOWOOMBA REGION
Outside the bustle and bright lights of downtown Toowoomba, you’ll find many smaller communities each with their own proud identity and wonderful histories – some dating back to early settlement.
Our rural towns are all within an hour or so drive from the Toowoomba CBD and they each have something unique to offer. Many residents choose a rural lifestyle and commute to work in the city.
Head north into the hills where you’ll discover the best scenic bush walks, creative businesses, fabulous food and lots of cute cottages for cosy weekends away. Fertile soil means abundant local produce from olives to blueberries and avocados to rhubarb.

Highfields is literally 15 minutes from the Toowoomba CBD which is probably why it’s the fastest growing town in the region. With underground power and big house blocks, it’s popular with families who want room to grow.
High Country Hamlets
The locals call the area north of Highfields the “High Country” and they have forged a strong, connected community that works together for economic and social benefit.

Famous for: State Forest, great views, cute B&Bs, avocado farms, gin distillery.
Pechey was once a thriving timber town. The Pechey State Forest still grows pine trees for commercial timber markets today. The descendants of Edward Wilmot Pechey live in the same farmhouse built in the 1920s but these days they are distillers of quality spirits.

Famous for: Historic township, Mountain Bike Mecca, Crows Nest Falls, soft drinks, Pioneer Village, Bunnyconnellen Olive Grove, Curly Carrot Restaurant, Holland Wines, wedding venues
Crows Nest is one of those picturesque Australian country towns with a pretty main street, Memorial Park and a large friendly pub which is central to everything. Locals have mapped out some wonderful cycling routes which they’re calling Mountain Bike Mecca – worth checking out!

Famous for: Historic township and buildings, sunflowers, large vegetable farms including lettuce.
Cambooya’s amazing black soil plains seem to be able to grow almost anything! In the right season, you'll see spectacular fields of crops as you drive around.

Famous for: Historic township, Nobby Pub, Arthur Hoey Davis “Steele Rudd”, Sister Elizabeth Kenny, Heritage Walk

Famous for: Historic Greenmount Hotel and the Wheatsheaf Hotel, Mountview Homestead Farm Stay, Darling Downs Zoo at Pilton.
Drive around the Greenmount area and you'll get a feel for what drives this farming community.

Famous for: Historic township, McKinlay Nursery, Pioneer Village, Broxburn Bash, Pittsworth Craft and Fine Food Spectacular.
Pittsworth is another one of those quintessential country towns with attractive main street, central pub, great coffee shops and lots of historic buildings.

One hour from Toowoomba CBD
Famous for: Historic township, historical murals, Millmerran Museum, Factory Dam Park, Mount Basalt Reserve, Annual Sheep Races, Camp Oven Festival.
You really are in the country now with a beautiful local community, quality agricultural land and lots of broadacre crops, cattle and sheep farms.

30 minutes from Toowoomba CBD
Famous for: Jim’s Jerky DFO, Hitchley & Harrow DFO, Oakey Army Base, New Hope Mine, colonial architecture, butter factory.
Oakey is another picturesque country town with bustling main street, pubs, train station and lots of cute colonial cottages. Just outside Oakey, at Charlton, is a small DFO worth checking out.
