Newlands Group - Capital city benefits without the price tag
Newlands Group is a dynamic civil and commercial construction company leveraging the cost benefits of being headquartered in Toowoomba, particularly when attracting and retaining staff.
General Manager Tim Miles says Toowoomba has all the benefits of a capital city, without the price tag or the traffic.
“Compared to a capital city it’s much more cost effective to be in Toowoomba than anywhere else,” Miles says.
“Our competitive advantage is how easy it is to live and do business in Toowoomba.
“We’re more than a country town. We are a very cosmopolitan city, we’re just in a regional area.”
Miles says Toowoomba’s proximity and connectivity to south east Queensland, western Queensland and northern New South Wales is another significant advantage.
“Unlike being in other regional areas, we can be in the centre of Brisbane within two hours,” he says.
“We don’t have the traffic, we don’t have the cost of living pressure of houses over a million dollars so I think that’s the main benefit. It’s the liveability of Toowoomba.
“I speak to family and friends in Melbourne all the time, getting them to understand that this exists, and all these opportunities exist and it’s actually an easy place to live.”
Miles says Newlands sees a real imperative to take a holistic approach to staff recruitment, retainment and development, investing heavily in training its own workforce and creating a positive work culture.
“We spend a significant amount of time and money ensuring we’re a great place to work,” he says.
“We’re genuine and I think most businesses in Toowoomba are genuine in putting these things in place rather than just doing it from a tokenistic point of view.”
Miles says the variety of construction work on offer in the Toowoomba region also far exceeds most other regional centres.
“From a trade perspective there are so many opportunities for young people looking to get into the construction industry, or a trade based industry.”
